Horticultura del Sureste: organise to grow, digitise to decide

In a company that works hundreds of hectares over the year, profitability does not depend on production alone. It depends on being able to know exactly how much it cost to produce, where the most time was spent, where deviations occurred and where the margin fell short of expectations.

At Horticultura del Sureste, that awareness became increasingly clear as the operation grew in size and complexity.

Four farms, several crops, constant decisions

Horticultura del Sureste is one of the companies within an agricultural group with a significant presence in southeast Spain. Over the year, it works between 350 and 400 hectares of vegetables, with several crop rotations: lettuce, courgette, pepper, broccoli, melon and watermelon. Each crop has its own calendar, its own technical requirements and its own specific costs.

This diversity means different plans throughout the year, teams in the field, monitoring of consumption, management of working hours and constant tracking of costs by crop. In practice, this means information has to flow quickly and reliably.

Today, between 25 and 30 people use Wisecrop daily at Horticultura del Sureste, from supervisors who record tasks to administrative teams that analyse costs and reports.

Organising information to trust the numbers

Before the change, the company already worked with a management system. The problem was not the absence of technology, but the difficulty in fully trusting the information it produced. Extracting clear data took time. Filtering by crop, by plot or by season was not always simple. And when information is not fully consistent, analysis is constrained. Israel, finance manager at Horticultura del Sureste, recalls that this was one of the main reasons for seeking another solution: the need to better organise field activities and, above all, to ensure the numbers reflected reality.

“For us it is essential that the crop report is aligned with the accounting. We cannot make decisions on incorrect data .”

In an operation with hundreds of hectares and multiple crops throughout the year, small inaccuracies add up quickly. And when that happens, perception can drift away from real profitability.

When analysis changes how you read the season

One of the most significant impacts of reorganising the information was the ability to confront the feeling on the ground with the final numbers.

“We often think a crop went well. But when we pull the final report, we realise it wasn't as profitable as we imagined .”

Cases like courgette or broccoli showed exactly this. In one recent broccoli cycle, the difference to reaching profitability was just three cents. On a large scale, three cents multiply across tonnes. Without a consolidated view of costs, working hours, consumption and production, that deviation would hardly be identified with precision.

Today, decisions about planning and whether to continue with crops are made on the basis of detailed reports. Analysis no longer depends on experience alone; it is now backed by consistent numbers.

Fewer repetitive tasks, more capacity to analyse

Digitising the recording of hours and tasks in the field made it possible to progressively reduce the use of paper and eliminate part of the repetitive work involved in manually transcribing data.

The company estimates it has cut between 5 and 10 hours of administrative work per month on data entry alone, information that used to be recorded on paper and later typed up. More important than the time saved is the reduction in error and the improvement in data quality.

At the same time, analyses that were previously out of reach became possible, such as productivity indicators in kilos per hour. This kind of information makes it possible to assess teams, compare seasons and identify opportunities for improvement with greater objectivity.

A path that continues

For Israel, digitisation in the agricultural sector is an inevitable process.

He recently completed training in digital transformation applied to the agri sector, reinforcing his conviction that companies will have to structure their processes better and integrate tools that make management easier.

At Horticultura del Sureste, the work is not finished. The goal is to keep reducing paper, improve integration with accounting and automate tasks wherever possible. If he had to sum up the platform they use in one phrase, the definition is simple: "Agile, intuitive and simple."

But for the company, the impact goes beyond simplicity. In a context where small differences determine the profitability of a season, the ability to organise information and trust the numbers has become a central part of management.

And in an increasingly demanding sector, deciding on the basis of data is no longer an advantage. It is a condition for continuing to grow.

Processing tomatoes: managing the peak of the season without losing control

In processing tomatoes, a whole year's work is decided in just a few weeks. Between July and October, harvesting, transport and delivery to the factory run non-stop, with reinforced teams and machines that cannot stop.

This is the stage that separates a profitable season from one that is merely completed. Almost always through the small daily deviations that no one has time to record when the peak hits hard.

A sector where everything is decided in a few weeks

Portugal is one of Europe's largest producers of tomatoes for processing. Production is concentrated in the Ribatejo and the Alentejo and, in Spain, in Extremadura. In both countries the calendar is the same: the season runs from July to October, with the bulk of the harvest concentrated into around eight weeks.

The business model is the same too. The price per tonne is locked into a contract months before harvest. From there, profitability depends on two things: production costs and how the season is executed.

In practice, this means the margin is played out in cents. A small deviation, repeated across thousands of tonnes, makes the difference between a season that pays off and one that is merely completed.

Where money is lost without being seen

A tractor idle for two hours waiting for a trailer. A plot harvested outside the optimal °Brix point because the ripeness information never reached the person making the decision. An irrigation cycle kept running because no one updated the plan when the harvest was brought forward. Overtime hours piling up without anyone knowing, at the time, how much they cost per hectare.

None of this shows up in October's accounts under its own name. It shows up diluted in a lower-than-expected margin. And without records, it is impossible to know where the loss occurred.

What changes when information flows in real time

The answer is not to work harder. It is to make sure information reaches decision-makers while there is still time to correct course. That is Wisecrop's role during the season: bringing irrigation, teams and costs together on a single platform, fed from the field.

For irrigation, the final weeks of the cycle have a different goal from the rest of the year: managing the water cut-off before harvest to concentrate soluble solids and allow machinery into the plot. When the irrigation plan is linked to each plot's harvest schedule and to the weather forecast, every time the harvest is brought forward or pushed back the irrigation adjusts without relying on a phone call. With the Irrigation App, you know exactly when and how much water is being applied in each sector and, with integrated soil moisture sensors, you follow the ground's response instead of deciding by estimate.

For teams, the digital recording of field activities, who did what, in which plot, for how long, lets you see the bottlenecks on the same day. With seasonal teams that double or triple during the season, paper can no longer keep up with the pace.

For costs, the logic is the same. In the Costs App, labour, machinery and inputs are allocated to each plot as they occur, which lets you compare plots mid-season and see where the cost per hectare is drifting from the plan. The correction is made while the season is still under way, not in the next one.

The season ends. The data stays

In the end, there is a second, less visible advantage. A recorded season is a season that teaches.

This year's yields per plot, real costs per tonne, machine times and irrigation deviations are stored in Wisecrop and become the basis for next year's contracts and planting plan. Experience still counts, but it is no longer on its own.

The peak of the season will happen either way. The difference is whether you go through it blind or with the numbers on the side of the decision.

How Maio Verde grows quality blueberries and uses 32% less water

Few crops demand as much precision as the blueberry. The roots are sensitive, the nutritional balance is delicate, and the right amount of water one day can be too much the next. Managing all this by eye is possible, but it tends to cost dearly: a small misjudgement, repeated across a season, always ends up showing in the fruit.

This is the demand Maio Verde, a berry grower in Portugal, lives with every day. Run by siblings Francisco and Maria João Raro, it grows blueberries across 8.2 hectares spread over three farms.

A crop that does not forgive

Before Wisecrop, much of the daily management rested on assumptions. Irrigation was the clearest example. With drip lines spread across eight hectares, there was no way to confirm whether every zone received water evenly. Decisions followed scheduled irrigation hours, the theory, without anyone knowing what was really happening in the soil.

Nutrition raised an even more delicate problem. The blueberry is extremely sensitive to the amount of nutrients: too much fertiliser burns the roots, too little compromises the harvest. Without measuring the soil's electrical conductivity, it was impossible to be sure of hitting the right point, and in blueberries that point is narrow.

On top of all this came distance. Francisco and Maria could not be in the field at all hours, and without real-time information every absence brought the same silent question: is everything all right?

"Blueberries are not an easy crop. We get hail out of season, frost out of season... These are all challenges the grower has to manage" sums up Maria João Raro, grower at Maio Verde.

From guesswork to data

The answer was not to irrigate more or to control less. It was to see. Maio Verde installed a set of six devices that work together like a nervous system for the farm: sensors that sense, controllers that act and a platform that brings everything together in one place.

A soil moisture probe began to show what the plant actually has available. An electrical conductivity sensor brought nutrition into what can be measured, instead of leaving it to estimation. Three Agronic controllers began acting on irrigation based on that information, and a full weather station turned the weather, once an unpredictable threat, into data you can count on.

It is the combination of weather and irrigation that changes the nature of the decision. You stop irrigating because the time has come and start irrigating because the soil and the weather justify it. At the height of summer, when water demand peaks and every excess or shortfall is paid for quickly, that is where this difference matters most.

What changes when you irrigate just right

The goal was never simply to use less water. It was to produce better. And it was precisely by irrigating just right, adjusting water to real conditions instead of applying it for safety's sake, that Maio Verde ended up using 32% less water, without compromising the yield or the quality the farm is determined to maintain.

The saving is, in essence, proof that precision works. When you irrigate by eye, you almost always over-irrigate. When you irrigate with data, you give the plant what it needs and little more, and it is the fruit that benefits.

The gain, however, is not measured in water alone. With six devices continuously monitoring the soil and the microclimate, the siblings began managing the farm remotely.

"From a distance, in another part of the country, I can know whether the orchards are irrigating, how much water is running through the pipes... We know at any moment what we can do better," says the grower.

Amplifying the grower, not replacing them

Maio Verde's case says something simple about agricultural technology: it did not come to replace the knowledge of those who produce, but to amplify it. Francisco and Maria still make the decisions about the orchard. The difference is that today they decide with the whole field in front of them, not with the uncertainty of guesswork.

In a sector where water is increasingly scarce and the climate increasingly unpredictable, and in a crop as demanding as the blueberry, deciding on the basis of data is no longer an advantage. It is the condition for producing with quality, year after year.

Wisecrop and Trapview: monitor to predict, integrate to decide

In crop protection, the problem is rarely a lack of information. Traps, counts, field observations. The data is there. The challenge is turning it into sound decisions, at the moment when they still make a difference.

As a farm grows, the distance between observing and deciding becomes harder to manage. Monitoring often lives in a separate tool, far from where production is planned, recorded and followed day to day. And when information is scattered, acting in time becomes more complicated than it should be.

Knowing how many insects were caught says a lot. Knowing how that number evolves says even more.

Observations reach Wisecrop as graphs that track counts over time. Instead of an isolated snapshot, you get a curve that reveals the trend: whether the numbers are stable, rising or spiking. It is that reading that helps you sense when counts are approaching a level that justifies intervening, supporting the decision to act at the right moment rather than by the calendar.

Forecasting grounded in the reality of the plot

Predictive models are only as useful as they are close to what happens in the field. This is where the integration makes a difference.

On one hand, the observed flight curves make it possible to bring pest and disease models closer to real behaviour on the farm, instead of keeping them in a generic forecast. On the other, when traps carry sensors, such as air temperature, that local weather data also flows into Wisecrop. The result is a forecast better tuned to the specific conditions of each plot. And a forecast you trust is a forecast that guides decisions.

A Field Logbook that keeps pace with the field

Recording does not stop at observation. Observations automatically feed the digital Field Logbook, with no manual data entry.

In practice, you gain traceability and more complete records with less administrative work and less room for error. Information stays organised, consistent and available when you need it, whether to manage the season or to demonstrate the practices you have followed.

Treat less, treat better

All these advantages converge on a point that matters to any grower: when you know when to act and where to act, you apply only what is needed. Fewer unnecessary applications mean lower spending on plant protection products, fewer residues and lower risk of resistance.
